Ogni qual volta
i suoi lavori.
l'amore? Le parole possono restituire l' amore? Finito il poema, finito
l'amore? Tutto è possibile nel gioco della vita. In un altro
libro d'artista "Autobiografia", del 1989, Diotallevi scrive nelle prime
trenta pagine una riga sul margine basso con caratteri alfabetici argentei;
vitro" l'artista sembra avvicinarsi agli objets trouvés. Egli
All'ironia sottile ed all'autoironia
l'artista realmente spedisce a circa quattrocento persone e personaggi,
a destinazione.
quali è sufficiente ricordare Joseph Beuys, Roy Lichtenstein,
spedisce all'artista le sue missive amorose.

Don't
tell my mother I'm a painter...
she thinks I'm a picture-story actor
I've known Marcello Diotallevi for some years and his
work has always aroused a curious attraction in me. Each time I've been
able to see one of his works, at the level of first impact, I've found
their titles very striking, even before enjoying the images and the
content (for purely practical reasons we shall distinguish form from
content in this case, even if I personally believe that the two realities
coincide, that is, belong to the same structure). Assigning them titles,
Diotallevi names his works. Usually the term name is associated
with the action of denominating and therefore of specifying. At the
moment of naming his works the artist hints, almost under his breath,
at a clue or, better, a precise indication of his intention. The titles
and the works live in a totalizing relationship of symbiosis, a relationship
of prologue-epilogue, of beginning-end: a careful reading of the title
may lead to grasping the most authentic meaning of the artist's intentionality.
In "Love poem", an artist's book dating to 1985, at the beginning-prologue
there is a great red heart and a line of illegible gestural writing,
and at the end-epilogue the red heart has been replaced by an entirely
written page: have words consumed love? End of poem end of love?
All is possible in the game of life. In another artist's book, "Autobiography",
1989, Diotallevi writes on the first thirty pages a line in the lower
margin in silvery alphabetical characters. On the next and last page,
where the writing-slime terminates, a black snail with a multicoloured
shell appears. The same colours we find in the kites of the "Fairy-tales
to the wind". In other words, to echo Filiberto Menna: "Shifting the
object from its context the artist creates new thoughts for it, that
is to say he names it in a new way". And all the objects that Diotallevi
investigates, be they artist's books, fables in the wind, graphics folders,
are shifted from their cultural context, stripped of their meanings
and charged, or better, denominated, with irony to the extent that their
meaning takes on another aesthetic value, so much so as to arouse the
alienation effect which causes us to perceive the object as something
new because it is found in a formally new context. But in the case of
"In vitro poem" the artist seems to approach objets trouvés.
Over the years he gathered in a container the letters (the positives)
of "Fairy-tales to the wind", works created with coloured cloth on which
the artist drew and cut (the negatives) his writing out of the cloth.
There is no apparent voluntariness in the gesture of then putting the
cuttings-writing, sedimented for eight years, into a glass bottle; but
with this simple gesture the artist actuates the achievement of the
work: an object-book. Together with the subtle irony and self-irony
always present in each work, from the titles on, there is often an ill
concealed dadaist type self-gratification, above all when one supposes
that Diotallevi flees from all rules that restrain the spirit and for
this reason follows the free movement of his self. But it is the "Autobiography"
which reveals another aspect of the artist's personality. The highly
coloured snail that arrives at the end of the book is a metaphor of
the artist's existential situation, characterised by slowness and the
use of colour. He is not prolific, indeed he favours reasoning and reflection.
If irony leaps out clearly in each work, the slowness comes from the
time of conception, sedimentation and realisation of a work or cycle.
But one must not confuse slowness with procrastination, since he is
an artist of thought who above all loves intellectual provocation. In
the forty "Letters to senders", which are small print-run silkscreen)
actually sent by the artist to around four hundred persons and personalities,
taking care to put the addressee's address in the place of the sender's
and writing indecipherable addresses on the address part of the envelope,
he tricked the unknowing postman who, unable to decipher the address,
returned the letter to the sender so that it actually arrived at its
destination. Inside the envelope, apart from the silkscreen letter sent
as a gift, there was also a note in which the artist explained the operation
and asked the addressee to send him back the envelope. This provocation
produced hand-written replies from some of the most important contemporary
artists and writers, of whom it is sufficient to mention Joseph Beuys,
Roy Lichtenstein and Marcel Janco among the former and Allen Ginsberg
and Andre Pieyre de Mandiargues among the latter. One aspect of Diotallevi's
work on which is appropriate to pause and reflect is the planning aspect
which strongly marks the artist's oeuvre, becoming the centre of propulsion
even before the actual artistic act. Much has been written by authoritative
modem and contemporary art scholars on the planning aspect of art. Here
we only wish to underline how the artist processes his intention, one
of his ways of reading the language of art and illustrating it
through his works. Intention and manner, which always have a basis of
a rational nature, a mental dimension that is always resolved in the
plan. We might state that without a plan there would be no Marcello
Diotallevi oeuvre. At this point a warning seems due and necessary:
in the programming of his works we find no reference to an absolute
plan, nor to the idea of a plan; if anything we seem to glimpse an aesthetic
intent in which he expresses himself in a free and achieved way. In
the "Letters from Kythera", a recent cycle, the artist shares with the
beholder all his passion for alphabetic symbols, for the written word
and for eros. Every tip of the skin of the female body, naked or nearly,
is converted into a numberless quantity of typewriter characters. A
typewritten female body where each "Letter" narrates a love or, better,
erotic situation. And it is precisely from the island of love that Venus
sends the artist her amorous missives. "Letters to senders", "Letters
from Kythera", "Fairy-tales to the wind" reveal, together with Marcello
Diotallevi's entire oeuvre, that subtle play of purposefully ironic
and somewhat self-gratified infringement that has always marked the
artist's existential and artistic doings.
